Sketchworks Blog Launch

At Sketchworks Architecture, we’re excited to give you a peek into our world in our new blog. We’ll be posting to give you insights on what we’re working on and what exactly we do. Read on to hear about who we are and how we got started.

An entrepreneurial spirit, a passion for architecture and high quality service were the reasons behind owner and CEO, Steve Shulfer’s founding of Shulfer Architects in 2004. Working as a project manager, partner and associate at a large Madison-area architecture firm gave Steve the background and ambition to breakout on his own.

“Starting the business in 2004 was a huge step for me to bring what I love to do to the Madison area,” says Steve. “And ever since then, we’ve never lost sight of what we’re here to do, which is design the best possible spaces and places for our clients.”

Partner and executive director of project development, Brad Koning, joined us in 2007. Brad came with a breadth of experience working with large construction projects and overseeing design.

“At Shulfer I’ve had the opportunity to be a part of new and exciting projects. We love sitting down with each client to figure out how we can improve and build upon their successful businesses,” says Brad.

Thirteen years later, Shulfer Architects evolved into Sketchworks Architecture, LLC. This evolution conveys an assemblage of bright, experienced and skilled professionals. Our architects are proud to have worked with many notable Midwest clients to shape the spaces they live and work in.

Our firm contributes to the vibrant retail, restaurant and business landscape of Madison and beyond. We’ve worked on interesting projects such as Forage Kitchen and Roast Public House. These are two restaurants that are focused on healthy, local eating. You’ll see our work in Endurance House, an endurance sport enthusiast retail store with two locations in

Middleton and the east side of Madison, and the family-friendly Rockin’ Jump, a franchise trampoline and activity gym. Many office spaces throughout the city and state have our stamp on them. Office spaces that we have worked on include InForm, a product testing company; The Employer Group, a payroll processing/HR company; and Aprilaire, a 2017 InBusiness Commercial Design Award winner.

“Our favorite part is achieving our clients’ objectives, whether it’s improving an existing space, expanding a business or new construction. We get to be a part of helping clients realize their dreams,” says Steve.

Sketchworks Architecture is affiliated with the American Institute of Architects. We have two registered architects, drafting/technical experts, administrative staff and interior design expertise. We have worked on a mix of projects in the hospitality, scientific, residential and retail arenas. Many of our marquee projects have won awards throughout the years from prestigious organizations such as the Wisconsin chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors and InBusiness magazine.
